week nine Colours patterns

This week I had to create illustrations in just pure colours. The objects that I was given were patterned objects ranging from toys to carpets. I was produce this task to understand colour in it's purest form and how it changes when the objects had crease or corners. Overall this task was great for me to get to express objects in just pure colour and to understand how colours express an object.

Packet of flour from France, Material: watercolour pencil with water

Toy car, Materials: Ball point pen and fine liners with water

Doll, Materials: Pro markers and a brush pen

Party hat, material: Watercolour pencil with water

Carpet, Material: Drawing inks

Complex Carpet, Material: Watercolour pencils and water

With these outcomes I was pleased with them But I could of done better by not including black as a shading colour and I did not take my time with these which I regret doing.  I did take my advice from the previous week and used paper that is more designed for multi purpose artwork.

With image one of patterned flour package. I was applied to the design of the package because of it basic colour scheme but also the simple outline of the imagery. But with this design I wish I could change such as a drawing material that does not leave a mark on the piece of work and next time I should do a rough layout of the object before colouring. But my only pleasing features of this work is get the right colours that match the object and get the basic design of the object right.

The toy cars is my least favourite because even by look at it, I can tell that I did not take my time with and I really regret designing this drawing. But overall I think this is a good remind on what I should not do next time such as using the black fine liner as shading tool because it comes out too strong and does not work well with the orange. I also should not use ball point as a outline tool because it does not match with colours and it looks to rough. But I could sought out this problem by using a black ball pen instead of a blue one and taking my time with the outline. I also need to learn how to be aware when applying colour to an object and get the sense of lighting on the object.

The third image is my doll picture which is one that I approve, because I used a material that I have used before but not for a while, so it was nice to refresh my mind on the technique. With the material I used a simple colouring scheme of basic colours of what the object had. To apply the shading to the doll I used simply layer of darker colour than the colour underneath. I also tried to a drawing technique which is cross stitching which is a pattern in which I basically draw lines on top of each other to get a shading technique. I want to uses this method of shading a drawing technique to get a scarf texture to the drawing. Overall this piece of work did not because I need to add a different colour to add a shadows in the clothing. I also used my black brush pen for skirt which was a mistake because I have only gave the skirt a one dimension. So next time when colouring I should use multiply colours which blend together which will make a better shadow effect on the clothing. The things that I got right was the skin which was simple blend of a pale pink and brown which would be good to keep in mind when using the technique again in later drawings.

The four image is of a party hat, with this image I was trying to get a lighting effect on the hat with colour because even with the lighting the hat did not have any white light on it at all. So with this in mind I tried to create a illustration of light shining on a object. I think it did work because the colours are different from each other but again I did the same mistake in using black as my dark colour. So note to self when ever I am doing a drawing using colours take out the black. With the overall design I think that I got the shape down of the object but I should of not pressed as hard on the watercolour crayons when applying the colour.

The image of the purple was a bit of task for me because I have never used drawings inks as a pure drawings media, this was bit out of comfort zone but it was challenge that I was willing going to take.  With the drawing itself I find it okay because it captured the basic pattern of the carpet but it could of been better by adding water to the ink so that I could added more realistic detail such as creases. So I failed to listen to my previous advice but I definitely know that I should use water to improve the image. I also did not fit in the whole image, so my next task for myself it to learn size control when drawing onto a piece of paper.

The final image is of red carpet which was the best to draw because it had a range of colours and it had a complex pattern. With this image I was trying to get a cloth effect by just using colour. I found this a great experience because I was drawing it from an angle so because of the creases I was not going to see all of it and it cut some of the pattern off from my line of view. I also got this crease effect by using the watercolour crayons and I took by previous advice and was softer with the crayon when adding a line of colour for me to add water too. This advice because it created a nice smoothness to the drawing. I tried to express this through the colours I did work with the reds but I use the black again to outline it. This is a bad habit that I need to break out of. So overall I got my aim but I need restrict myself from using black.

So my experience from this is I need to stop using black for shading and to use size balance. So in my next task stop using black as overall shading material and try to draw a whole image into my sketchbook.

week eight drawing print blocks

These week was to get the basic idea of lettering on objects and fonts.

I am one that has rarely done illustrations basically based on text, So this will be a good exercise for me to practice so that I get how text works in illustrations and how text works in a 3D concept.

Thumbnails of possible sketch, Material: Pencil

Sketch from thumbnails, Material: Pencil

With these sketches it was a task that I found a bit difficult because I had to do a task that I was not familiar with. But this did not stop me from trying. With my drawing materials I have got uses and favourite using fine liner with water because it easy to produce drawings and colouring the drawing. But I though to myself I need try something like drawing crayons which is material that I have used before but I am not as comfortable with as much as fine liners. But I tried it anyway and I did find it as a good drawings material because it easy to control the level of colouring and shading with how hard I press down on the pencil. But my only regret is that I used watercolour paper which wasn't my best choice because of it bumps texture. So next time uses a matter that is multi purpose or plain paper.  Even though I am happy with the outcome I still need to practice with this material in later drawing tasks.  With the fine liner drawings I am happy that I have taken my own advice about using fine liner with water because it quick and easy material to use and I would like to use this when creating most of my sketchbook stuff or creating notes.

The next task I was given was to create rough thumbnails of what I was planning out to do with my observational drawing. At first I was not sure about this because I though in way that you only really use that on creating storyboards and creative illustrations. But when I actually did it turned out that it actual quite a good of planning out what works best. The reasons why are that the thumbnails can be quick themselves and it gives the basic idea of what I might what to do with the object and what angle I want to do. After decide on what angle I did the object, I convinced that I should use this technique from now on so when I am planning out sketches I get the basic outline, outcome and then decide on what the best route to take. With the overall outcome I wanted to just capture the basic outline of the shape which was interesting do from that angle. Overall I am okay with the outcome because I got my aim of the basic outline but I think next use a black pen, so that I get a bold outcome and I should use this with the thumbnails as well.

Overall this task has open my eyes with what I should do before I create my observational drawings.

week seven Pittville pump room

This week what we had to do was go to Pittville Pump room to draw observational drawings of it from different angles and distance. This is a task that I found interesting because I want to understand the basic concept of building. I was taking the information that I used for the Oxford trip to help improve these drawings such as getting the right proportions size and to use the grid that was given to use in the task sheet and the same grids used with the cars.

When I completed the observational drawings, I then had to recreated from the sketches that I did and create detailed illustrations from them. I liked the concept of this task because I had to use my memory as my drawings tool and using my own quick drawings as reference. This task is helping me improve my memory skills and observational drawing skills.

Materials: Ink, pencil and fine liner.

This is the final outcome of my memory sketch. with the overall design I went with sections of the building that were eye catching to me and to use bright colours, so that it stands out.

With the first part I want to focus on is the statue. The statue is from the front of the building, I decide to go for this section because of the detail of the statue. I used the black ink instead of coloured in because I wanted to help improve myself on my shading with just using one material. I think this overall is good but I could of done better, for example I think I should start using water with the ink so that I get weak wash of black so that it looks balanced.  So next time in my sketches I should use water and inks instead of just ink. But I did use the information from previous weeks which was taking my time with a piece but next time improve the material method.

The next part that I want to focus on is the window next to the statue. This one was again a close up of a section of the building that I found interesting. I decide to draw this so that I could practice using colours will given a reflecting effect. I think I got this effect by give white gaps in the window but I could of improved this by using water to get a wash of ink instead of a bold blue which makes it look unrealistic when the sky was a light shade of blue. I also did the same technique on the top of Pittville pump room, expect I used a green ink. But this one I used fine liner pen for the extra detail which I would use more because I describes the object will not distracting you from the colour. with the overall design I was pleased with it because I took my time with it which is something that I should do more when creating my illustrations. The next  drawing is done in pencil which is the one on the middle of page which is a focus of the top of pillars of Pittville pump room, I decided to go with pencil so that I could practice more with material and to understand how to do basic shading with pencil. I think that I have got the basic concept of shading but I need to improve this in next sketches so that I can improve and to gain more of a understand of natural shading.  The final sketch on the bottom right hand corner is a full front redesign of Pittville pump room. This is sketch that I took my time with and it looks neat and tidy because I took my time. But my only problem with this sketch is that it is not straight. With this I could of used a ruler to get a straight line outcome. So next time I need to use a ruler to get a straight line.

Overall this task was interesting because it showed me what it's like to understand the architecture of building and I got to use my previous advice from my trip to Oxford and with the cars. Because I used the grid from the cars and I used the stages where I uses a rough sketch then outline it on top. But now I have new advice to give myself when creating my next stages.  When creating my ink sketches uses a water brush so that I get a wash of ink so that I get a basic shading.

week six cars drawings

For this project we had to go around Cheltenham drawing cars. This projects was interest because I never drawn a car before but I found a fun and fascinating task. The only bad thing about this project was that it was very cold so it made very hard to draw but I still pushed on. The materials that I used was fine liners and wash brush pen which worked perfectly because it was great to create quick sketches which could have colour and shading.

The reason why some of them have a grid around is because I was taught how to make a car from some of the images that I made and recreate in a different angle. This a great technique to know because I could apply this to humans, buildings or objects. Overall I enjoy using this technique because it quick to use and  perfect for creating shading by just adding water.

Week five First and third person scenario

The experiment was to take a scene from my story and to add a story board which normal used in animation or creating comics. The task was to design them in different style, one being neat and using shading the other uses quick and simple outlines.

Materials: Pencil used to create rough sketches and panels, Fine liner to tidy it up and used for shading.

Material used: Brush pen to create simple outlines and quick sketches.

With this little project I found it fun to do a storyboard, so that I get an idea for the future when designing my comics. With the detail storyboard I adore the detail because it has give depth to the cave and it made more interesting to look at. I would different do this one again if I want to design my storyboard but I think if I have the time. With the simple outline storyboard it great for simple and quick storyboard if I just want a basic idea of what I want to do. But with this process I think should add a little more detail and more time drawing it. But overall I think use this more in future when I want basic idea of what my story will look like.

week five Non narrtive comic strip

For this exercise, I was give three scenarios to chose to illustrate. These scenes were non-narrative which are scenes that having nothing to do with the story but they serve the story by making a break in between the action of the story. This is also used in films and TV besides graphic creations. I think this technique is used to show that the characters are more human and making them more relatable.

The scenarios that we were given were:
Appling lipstick
Lighting a match
Drink water

With this assignment we had to make the scenes exciting but stick to non narrative. With my creation I original did the match one but I designed this quickly and had a lot of empty space to where I could fill it up with more non narrative content. I do enjoy the design because simple and sharp. But the things that I would change next time would be use more colours. I need to stop using greys and to add more colour because the lips and lipstick work perfect. But with the overall drawings I really thrilled with because I think that I have got the angle and zoom right because your seeing what happening step by step but again the greys let it down. When we showed the group my illustration overall they said that it did not make sense and what was the final panel below the lit match. So next time I should add some colour to make it look like a wick from a stick of dynamite or add a bit of red to hint that it dynamite. But with the overall product I think it was a good thing to go for just the lips being coloured because you focus on them and I think overall it would look too busy. Next time as well do not fold the work.

Week three advance drawings

Because of the poor weather, I could not go out into Cheltenham to draw buildings, so instead the group got give boxes instead. This was a good replacement for buildings because it has the exact outline of buildings and also it got the depth which is also like s building. With this exercise I used pencil to get the tones and understand basic shading. After doing the box, we had to imagine the boxes we buildings by adding pieces of paper in shape of squares, circles, rectangle and layering them up. with this side of exercise I used a brush pen and fine liner to get the simple outline of the shape, I used this technique because I think it gives the illusion that its a building. With the fine liner it was good to use it with a water brush to create basic shading. This technique does not work as well as pencil for shading but gives the basic idea. Overall this exercise was useful get the sense of depth, shading and basic concept of what a building like.
